CGL Insurance for Ontario Contractors & Trades
The $2M–$5M liability coverage general contractors require before you're allowed on site — with a same-day Certificate of Insurance when you need one.
Why Ontario Contractors Need CGL Insurance
Almost no general contractor will let a subtrade start work without proof of active Commercial General Liability insurance — typically $2 million, sometimes $5 million for higher-risk trades. It's the coverage that responds if your work injures someone on site or damages the property you're working on or near.
Costs run roughly $800 to $2,500 per year for most trades, higher for demolition, roofing, and excavation. See our full CGL cost breakdown for exact ranges by trade.
Typical Coverage Limits by Trade
| Trade | Typical Required Limit | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Handyman / small renovations | $1M – $2M | Lower-risk, interior work |
| Electrician / plumber | $2M | Standard GC requirement |
| General contractor | $2M – $5M | Depends on project size |
| Roofer / excavation / demolition | $5M | High-risk trade, often required |
| HVAC / landscaping | $2M | Standard GC requirement |

Certificate of Insurance & Additional Insured
Your Certificate of Insurance (COI) is the document a GC or property manager checks before granting site access. If they've asked to be added as an additional insured, that's a separate endorsement on your policy — not automatic — so tell your broker who needs to be named before the COI is issued.
Once your policy is active, we can issue a COI the same day. If you have a job-site start date, let us know upfront so nothing holds up your access.
